Mar de Frades presents its new wine, Finca Lobeira 2019. “A wine of a very pure nature, with a touch of wild forest and coastal sand. Rooted in granite, surrounded by forest and very close to the sea that gives us life”. That is how Paula Fandiño, technical director of Mar de Frades, describes the brand’s newest incorporation.

What makes it unique?

Finca Lobeira 2019 comes from the in the wooded foothills of the magical Monte Lobeira, in the Val do Salnés. This legendary place is surrounded by pine and eucalyptus trees and located at the highest geodesic point in the region, 134 metres above sea level, in an area of decomposed granite soil. This wine is unique because it is made with four white varieties: the majority being Albariño, followed by as Godello, Loureiro blanco and Caíño blanco. It should be noted that it is the only Mar de Frades wine that is not a single varietal. Its style is radically modern, yet it sustains an inspiring connection to the heartbeat of the area’s winemaking history through the combination of the grapes, their lively character and thrilling expression. Mar de Frades Finca Lobeira is born of a place that holds great magnetism, destined to become one of the top vineyards of the Rías Baixas of the future.

Winemaking and presentation

Mar de Frades Finca Lobeira requires an even more demanding winemaking process. The grapes undergo maceration for 15 hours at 12ºC in Ganimede tanks. They are then gently pressed in a closed press. The must is fermented with indigenous yeasts at 17ºC. Mar de Frades Finca Lobeira is matured for one year in contact with the lees. It then spends two years in stainless steel tanks with periodic bâtonnage. Following production, Mar de Frades Finca Lobeira displays an intense yellow colour with golden glimmers, alongside aromas of a reductive, mineral and vertical nature.

It also contains hints of stone and balsam, as well as forest, granite and sea. Its vibrant, saline character, with high acidity, gives it an intensely appealing and flavourful palate. The label on the outside of Mar de Frades Finca Lobeira alludes to the lines left in the sand by the sea when it recedes at low tide, the very sand that harbours the estuaries’ gastronomical treasure: their prized clams.

Mar de Frades Finca Lobeira joins the Fincas collection

Among our collection, you will find Mar de Frades Finca Valiñas, one of Spain’s most elegant and sophisticated white wines. Made from grapes full of intense and fruity aromas, selected from the Finca Valiñas vineyard, next to the Mar de Frades winery and facing the Arousa estuary. This wine is aged on its own lees in stainless steel.

In addition, we have Mar de Frades Finca Monteveiga, a new interpretation of Albariño, born in the heart of the Ribera del Río Ulla, a landscape which is both distinguished and differential, located a few kilometres from the Galician coast. Finca Monteveiga is made from 100% Albariño grapes grown on the northern edge of the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin, in a setting surrounded by mountains where just 1.5% of the region’s Albariño is produced, and where the continental climate and the Atlantic are joined at the hand of the river Ulla.
