AN EXPLORATION OF THE VARIETIES OF MAR DE FRADES

Paula Fandiño, enologist at Mar de Frades, provides a first-hand description of all of the varieties of Mar de Frades. She will guide us along this very particular Atlantic route, where we get up close and personal with Mar de Frades Albariño, Godello, Brut Nature, Finca Valiñas, Finca Lobeira and Finca Monteveiga. A journey to the origin, Mar de Frades Albariño

Our first stop on this journey through the vineyards is at our flagship wine, Mar de Frades Albariño. The wine that we have spent the most time developing, it is made with our own grapes and those of our winegrowers, and strives to show all the potential and minerality of the Albariño variety. In the words of Paula Fandiño: “One thing I’d highlight about this wine is its salinity, which goes perfectly with its fruitiness, minerality and lasting finish”.

Our most unique wine, Mar de Frades Godello

The second stop on our route is at Mar de Frades’ most singular wine, Godello. The story of this wine stems from the innovative spirit of Mar de Frades, who wanted to explore other Galician grape varieties, and chose the Godello variety to be interpreted under the conditions of the Atlantic climate and granite soil. In addition, the Atlantic breeze gives the Godello grape its salinity and our granite soil gives it a touch of minerality, making our Godello one of a kind. Paula Fandiño tells us about the most characteristic features of this wine: “its intensity in nose, with notes of lychee, passion fruit and pineapple”, in addition to “its full-bodiedness thanks to the work with the lees at the winery”.

The first 100% Albariño sparkling wine, Mar de Frades Brut Nature

The next stop on our tour of the Mar de Frades varieties is Mar de Frades Brut Nature. Its story begins with our desire to explore the limits of Albariño using new winemaking methods, resulting in the first sparkling wine in the Rías Baixas appellation. Regarding the production of this wine, Paula Fandiño highlights the use of the traditional method, with a second fermentation process in bottle, where the wine rests for over 15 months with its lees. The influence of the Atlantic is reflected in the salinity of the Albariño grapes selected for Mar de Frades Brut Nature. What most stands out for Paula Fandiño are “the notes of toasted bread or almond and, most of all, the fine bubbles on the palate”.
